Abstract. In the course of the centuries, it has frequently been claimed that the problem of free will is the most difficult problem of philosophy. From Kant to van Inwagen, several influential thinkers have put the issue in the form of an antinomy: on the one hand, free will is indispensable in order to conceive ourselves as responsible, rational, and worthy beings; on the other hand, free will seems irreconcilable with the laws of nature, whether they are interpreted as deterministic or indeterministic.
In my talk, I will discuss a contemporary formulation the antinomy of freedom, by addressing some of the most recent results that come from both philosophical reflection and cognitive science and neuroscience, and will discuss a possible way out of this problem.

Mario De Caro – profesor filozofii na Università Roma Tre (Włochy) oraz profesor wizytujący na Tufts University (USA). Wraz z Davidem Macarthurem zaproponował szeroko dyskutowaną koncepcję naturalizmu liberalnego. Zajmuje się teorią działania, naturalizmem filozoficznym, filozofią moralną i filozofią umysłu. Redaktor i wydawca m.in: Hilary Putnam, In Dialogue, Harvard UP (ukaże się w 2015), Hilary Putnam, Philosophy in the Age of Science (z D. Macarthurem), Harvard UP 2012, Naturalism and Normativity (z D. Macarthurem) Columbia UP 2010, Naturalism in Question (z D. Macarthurem), Harvard UP 2004.
Prowadził badania na MIT oraz na Harvardzie. Wykłady gościnne wygłaszał na zaproszenie m.in. w Oksfordzie, Princeton, Indianie, Heidelbergu, Bonn i na Sorbonie.
Wykład prof. De Caro na UAM odbędzie się w ramach właśnie rozpoczynającego się projektu nt. relacji filozofii i neuronauk, finansowanego przez Fundację Templetona.
